Puppy found abandoned in San Antonio park with two broken legs

Rescue group raising funds for dog's surgery

SAN ANTONIO - Found abandoned last month by a San Antonio park police officer, a three-month-old Labrador-Shar Pei mix had fractures to her rear legs when she was brought into Animal Care Services.

ACS spokeswoman Lisa Norwood said there is no pending animal cruelty investigation at this time. How the dog was injured is unknown, but her rescuers said she may have been struck by a baseball bat. Norwood also said it is possible the pup may have been run over by a vehicle.

Fortunately for “Havana,” as she’s now known, volunteers with San Antonio Pets Alive were at ACS when she arrived and quickly rescued the dog by finding her a foster home with Denise Armenta.

When Havana emerged from her kennel, Armenta said she was surprised the pup was able to walk up to her.

Armenta said Dr. Ellen Jefferson, a veterinarian and director of San Antonio Pets Alive, told her, “that’s how bad she wants out of here.”

Jefferson said it appears the fractures are healing incorrectly, prompting the need for surgery.

Armenta said although SAPA covers medications for dogs in their foster homes, the surgery for Havana is estimated to cost $2,000.

“We need people to reach out and donate whatever they can,” Armenta said, by going to www.sanantoniopetsalive.org.

Although Havana is able to get around, Armenta said the puppy is on round the clock pain medications, “just to keep her going.”

Armenta said Havana has a sweet disposition, despite her discomfort, and is good with children and other dogs.

She urges the public to visit SAPA’s Facebook page to learn more about their rescues needing adoption, as well as information about fostering opportunities.

As a small business owner who is married with five daughters, Armenta said she is still able to foster dogs like Havana.

“They know they’ve been rescued,” Armenta said as Havana looked up at her. “They appreciate it. They really appreciate it.”
