UTSA football player arrested for robbery
Adefemi Adekeye kicked off team for alleged involvement in drug related robbery
SAN ANTONIO - On the football field, UTSA safety Adefemi Adekeye's job was to keep opponents out of the end zone. Now he's trying to keep himself out of jail after being accused of robbing a man at gunpoint during a drug deal at an off-campus apartment.
Tuesday, San Antonio police surrounded a building at The Outpost Apartments located in the 6800 Block of UTSA Boulevard. They were called there after a man said he was robbed by two gunmen.
According to court records, the victim, 20-year-old Vihar Bhakta, told police he was robbed while attempting to buy an ounce of marijuana at the complex. Instead of getting the drugs, he had an "AK" type assault rifle pointed at him when he took out his money to pay for the pot. The gunman reportedly said, "you're being jacked."
Bhakta was then "pistol whipped" by another man who was later identified as 21-year-old Adekeye.
A police report indicated officers pulled Adekeye over around 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday in the 4900 Block of Woodstone. He was initially held on an outstanding municipal warrant.
Adekeye was later picked out of a photo line-up by the victim. He is now charged with aggravated robbery and was being held on $75,000 bond.
UTSA Head Football Coach Larry Coker acknowledge the arrest in a statement.
"We were made aware of Adefemi Adekeye’s arrest on Wednesday night and have dismissed him from our program," Coker said in the statement. "Due to the ongoing investigation by law enforcement, we will not make any further comment on this situation.”
Students at UTSA's main campus were disappointed by the news one of their football players was arrested.
"It's surprising but at the same time it's like what can you say?" said Bethel Ozumba.
"The fact that it was a football player does shock me especially one that goes here," said T.J. Jackson. "At the same time it's not much of a surprise to me because you know these things happen."
