100+ kids compete in annual healthy choices for kids day
SAN ANTONIO - More than 100 kids from ages 6 to 18 competed Friday in the annual Healthy Choices for Kids Day -- this year, competing in Olympic fashion.
The day was full of events from scooter racing to shot put.
Nursing students with the University of Texas Health Science Center's nursing program put the event together.
Dr. Adelita Cantu said the program is designed to promote healthy lifestyles among children in hopes of combating the growing problem of childhood obesity.
"It's a curriculum that's based on making healthy choices regarding physical activity, exercise, nutrition, community service," Cantu said.
Cantu said the main problem with childhood obesity is that it oftentimes carries over into adulthood.
"If they remain obese, the healthcare costs are going to be astronomical," Cantu said.
According to the latest statistics posted by the Center's For Disease Control, one out of every 5 children is obese.
