Mayor confident in City Council Pre-K tax vote
1/8-cent tax raise would result in $31M for education initiative
SAN ANTONIO - The Pre-k 4 SA proposal calls for a sales tax increase of 1/8-cent over the next eight years to fund it.null
The San Antonio City Council is voting on Thursday whether to pass this controversial proposal.
However, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro said he is confident the majority of City Council will stand with him.
Castro said the sales tax increase -- which will occur over the next eight years -- is an investment in the city's future work force.
He says if approved by City Council as expected, the Pre-K 4 SA initiative will wind up on the November ballot for San Antonio voters to decide.
He says even though the average sales tax increase would amount to less than $8 a year, it would raise $31 million annually for the program.
That would expand early childhood opportunities for several thousand 4-year-olds if their families qualify for the program.
