James Whitley killed in shootout on West Avenue

15-year-old boy transported to Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital

SAN ANTONIO - A 24-year-old man identified by San Antonio police as James Whitley was killed and a 15-year-old teenager was wounded when they opened fire on each other at an apartment complex on West Avenue, police said.

Police responded to a call for shots fired around 10 p.m. Monday in the 3500 hundred block of West Avenue.

Whitley was shot in the hip and died a short time later at University Hospital, police said.

A bullet grazed the teen's head during the shootout. Detectives said he was not at the scene when they arrived, however, someone drove him to a convenience store at Blanco Road and Dresden and he was picked up by paramedics.

Police said the teen was taken to Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

Detectives have not said what led to the shooting. An investigation is ongoing and charges had not been filed as Tuesday morning.
