San Antonio shoppers, retailers welcome tax-free weekend

Sales tax holiday Friday through Sunday

SAN ANTONIO - Parents looking for a break on clothes, shoes and school supplies will get one this weekend as the state waives sales tax on most of those items Friday thought Sunday

Mari Balderas was shopping for a backpack for her daughter Friday, but said she would return this weekend despite expected crowds.

"If I have to throw elbows, I will," she said jokingly.

Retailers have done their homework. They have stocked up on school essentials like jeans, khakis and underwear. And they are advertising back-to-school sales to take advantage of heavier foot traffic.

"Expectation is, we are going to have a busy tax-free weekend," said Hector Guzman with Academy Sports and Outdoors. "We are hoping to have the biggest we've had so far."

For the retail industry, the anticipation can almost be compared to the days after Thanksgiving.

"Tax-free weekend is the second highest volume shopping holiday from a retail environment," said Rebecca Burrell with Ingram Park Mall.

The state estimates shoppers will save $64.8 million this weekend buying tax-exempt clothing, shoes, backpacks and more. Items must be less than $100 each to qualify.
