Suspected motorcycle thief survives crash outside Von Ormy

Suspect fled from police near I-35, Military Drive, reached speeds of 140 mph

SAN ANTONIO - A police chase that started near I-35 and Military Drive ended in a crash just outside Von Ormy late Wednesday night.

Police said a man, who was riding a stolen motorcycle, sped away from an attempted traffic stop and crashed after he was clocked at speeds over 140 miles an hour.

According to San Antonio Police Sgt. Mike Brown, the officer who tried to pull the suspect over saw his speed increase and decided it would be too dangerous to pursue him.

Five minutes later, police got a call from a witness who said the bike had crashed just outside the Von Ormy city limit.

The suspect suffered only road rash, and had no broken bones. Brown said he was wearing a helmet, and was thrown from the motorcycle before it hit a concrete barrier.

He was conscious and communicating with paramedics before he was taken to the hospital, Brown said.

Once he’s treated and released, the suspect faces charges of evading police and theft, police said. The suspect's name has not been released.
