Northside ISD holds pep rally for teachers

New Superintendent Dr. Brian T. Woods appears before teachers, administrators

SAN ANTONIO - Northside Independent School District held a pep rally at Brennan High School Tuesday morning -- not for the students, but for the teachers.

It was a '60s-themed rally, with a special appearance from Austin Powers.

"The energy is just fantastic,” said John King, a teacher at Sul Ross Middle School.

The rally was one of 10, since there are some 12,000 teachers and administrators in the district.

It is the first year for new Superintendent Dr. Brian T. Woods to lead the rally.

"It’s a little different and I am still getting a sense of that but am really excited," Woods said.

It was also a chance for Woods to get to know some of the teachers and a chance for them to get to know and hear from him for the first time.

"Just hearing from the superintendent and how he is supporting us reminds us that he is there for the teachers and that is what we need," said Michelle Sanchez, a teacher at Scobee Elementary.

"There is a lot of energy out there among some of the legislators about rolling back some of (those) accountability in testing issues that we have seen pass the last couple of sessions, " Woods said.

In the end, the teachers left fired up and ready for the school year to begin Monday.

"I just love it," King said.
