New elementary school to welcome Helotes students Monday
School boasts bilingual classrooms, new technology
HELOTES, Texas - Los Reyes Elementary School will open its doors Monday to hundreds of Pre-K through 5th-grade students.
Before new classmates are introduced, teachers are already meeting fresh faces.
"You get to meet all these new educators and bounce ideas off of each other and come up with all new plans that are different than where you and from," said first-grade teacher Daneen Bolido.
Wth any new school, comes new technology. Teachers will be able to use handheld tablets in the classrooms that will project whatever they write onto a touchscreen at the front of the class, giving them the freedom to move around the room and get rid of bulky projector carts.
"I don't think there's anything out there that we don't have at this time," said Principal Kathy Gorsche, referring to the latest gadgets.
Los Reyes is a bilingual school, where the goal is to teach Spanish speaking children English.
"Classrooms right now are a good mix of both English and Spanish speaking students. "So there's instruction in both languages."
A fresh facility offers plenty for students and parents to look forward to. But Principal Gorsche says its what inside that makes it more than just a nice building.
"I think when you feel that energy and see how the teachers want to do their best," Gorsche said, "I think that's what they should be excited about."
There will be 350 kids at Los Reyes on Monday. The school's capacity is 830. So some classrooms are empty, but Gorsche says they're ready to go because they're enrolling more students every day.
