Walmart offers gas discount as prices rise

Customers using Walmart plastic get up to 15 cents off gallon

SAN ANTONIO - As drivers wince at the storm surge washing gas prices to Labor Day weekend highs, Walmart announced a discount program for its customers.

Beginning Friday, customers who use a Walmart credit card of money card will get a 15 cents-per-gallon discount when they fill up at Walmart pumps.

Those using a Walmart gift card will get a 10 cents-per-gallon discount. Sam's Clubs are not part of the program which runs through Dec. 24.

Customer Ruben Castillo welcomed the break.

"Fifteen cents is fifteen cents right now," he said.

"Considering I do home health, I do a lot of traveling every day," she said. "I'm not filling up, I'm getting by until they go down."

Walmart's promotion  to drive customers to its stations begins as 2.4 million Texans are expected to hit the road for  Labor Day, facing the highest fuel prices ever for the holiday weekend.

Prices swelled 14 cents this week as Hurricane Isaac disrupted refineries in the Gulf.
