Police: Off-duty Poteet officer shoots, kills suspected intruder
SAPD: Suspect shot during break-in at officer's apartment on Jackson-Keller Road
SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio police said a suspected home intruder was shot and killed by an off-duty Poteet police officer at an apartment complex in the 1700 block of Jackson-Keller Road.
SAPD officers responded to a call for shots fired at the Lincoln Village apartments around 3:15 a.m.
Investigators said the officer, who is the apartment's tenant, was inside when someone tried to break in through a window in the kitchen.
"He told officers that he was inside his apartment with a couple of other friends on the computer when they heard the sound of glass breaking," San Antonio police spokesman Matt Porter said.
The off-duty officer told police he then heard another crash and saw the suspect crawling through a window.
"At that point, the officer identified himself and told the suspect to stop," Porter said.
The officer told SAPD investigators the man did not pay attention and he felt threatened, so he fired at the suspect.
The suspect fell back onto the balcony and died at the scene, San Antonio police said.
Investigators believe the suspected intruder randomly picked the apartment and was not targeting the officer.
San Antonio police are conducting the investigation. At this point, they do not expect the officer to face any charges.
The names of the suspect and officer have not been released.
