2 men arrested, suspected in 20 armed robberies

Matt Bernal, 23, and Justin Castro, 22, arrested Friday afternoon

SAN ANTONIO - Two men suspected in nearly 20 armed robberies over the last several weeks were arrested without incident Friday.

Matt Bernal, 23, and Justin Castro, 22, were taken into custody during a traffic stop Friday afternoon.

Police said the stop was not random, and that they knew who they were pulling over.

Patrol officers found a gun in the car, along with other unspecified items police said were incriminating.

Bernal has been charged with five counts of aggravated robbery and one count of possessing an illegal weapon.

Castro has been charged with one count of aggravated robbery.

Both men could soon face more charges, however, as police said they are suspects in at least a dozen other pending cases.

“They went on a robbery spree,” said Chief William McManus. “San Antonio is a safer place now that these two are off the street.”

Asked about their possible involvement in these crimes, Bernal said nothing. Castro said he was innocent.

McManus cited three incidents he claimed were the most heinous of the pair’s alleged crimes.

The first involved witnesses being shot at, the second involved a store clerk being shot in the stomach, and the third involved the pair tying up children and then stealing $3 dollars from a charity jar on a counter.
