Canadian medical device company moves headquarters to San Antonio

Innovative Trauma Care Inc.'s ITClamp clamps off open wounds to prevent blood loss

SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio became home to the North American headquarters of a new medical device company from Canada.

Dennis Filips comes from more than 2,200 miles away -- Edmonton, Alberta, to be exact.

And with him, the combat surgeon with 20 years of experience brings an innovative new medical device, and nearly 100 job opportunities by way of his company, Innovative Trauma Care Inc.

On Friday, ITC Inc. opened its North American headquarters in San Antonio.

"San Antonio was the ideal combination of civilian (and) military Level 1 trauma centers," Filips said.

But that's not the only reason.

Filips said the city of San Antonio has something uniquely attractive to business owners lucky enough to find themselves on the receiving end: some $300,000 in investment money.

Unlike any other city in the state, San Antonio has formed an economic development corporation, which allows city leaders to invest city funds into various businesses.

City Manager Sheryl Sculley said this particular company brings a lot to the table.

"It's a partnership with an international company, investing and creating high-wage jobs," Sculley said.

She said the goal of the city is to eventually achieve a return on the investment.

"(We're) investing so that we can use those moneys again and again for other economic development projects," Sculley said.

This is the third business the city's economic development corporation has invested in to date.

The ITCLamp

Innovative Trauma Care Inc. is the maker of a product called the ITClamp.

It's a small, clear clip with spikes on the clamp that's designed to hold skin together after a traumatic injury has occurred.

The sole purpose is to slow blood loss until the injured person can make it to a hospital.

"Time is of the essence from the point in which you're injured," Filips said.

The ITClamp isn't on the market yet.

Filips is awaiting FDA approval. He said he hopes to have it available in the next few months.
