30 Poteet teens cited for having alcohol at birthday party
Party's host may also face charges for furnishing alcohol to a minor
POTEET, Texas - A birthday party for the 16-year-old daughter of former Poteet school board member Bonnie Horn came to an abrupt halt Saturday night.
Poteet police detained 30 teenagers and say another 18 fled as officers arrived.
Each teen was issued a citation for minor in possession of alcohol.
Some parents say the citations were unfair and that their children were not drinking.
Leonard Martinez, whose grandson was cited, said, “Our grandson actually took a breathalyzer test and came up zero. ... But yet for some reason or another, the police department refused to accept that.”
Poteet police Sgt. Louis Farias said that the law is clear and that alcohol need only to be within arm’s reach in order for a citation to be issued.
“They were all within arm’s reach of the alcohol that was found in the kitchen, hallways and bedrooms,” Farias said.
Horn may also be facing charges, according to Farias.
“Right now, the investigation is ongoing but charges are probably going to be filed at large for furnishing alcohol to a minor,” he said.
He said that whether or not the teens were drinking, “Alcohol was readily available.”
Farias said that the department was still processing the cases and it will probably be mid-week before any court dates are set.
Minor in possession is a Class C misdemeanor.
