The Gonzales resident was just days shy of his 35th birthday.

Rescuers began looking for Rodriguez Sunday afternoon after he and several family members got into trouble in the water near FM 1117.

Although the water in that area is shallow, there is a point where it unexpectedly gets very deep, according to relatives.

“There's a drop off. We didn't see it. We didn't know,” said Gina Gonzalez, Rodriguez’s stepdaughter.

Gonzalez was one of four people, including a pregnant woman, who were rescued successfully.

Monday morning, all she could do was watch as divers went back into the murky water for the second day. A little more than an hour into the operation, they made the sad discovery.

"The dive team did find Mr. Rodriguez about where the family last saw him in the water," said Zachary McBride, an investigator with the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office.

McBride said rescuers encountered a number of problems in their search for Rodriguez. The murky water made it difficult for divers to see.

Additionally, on Sunday, Fire Chief Scott Mycue said the water in that area was too shallow for the fire department’s rescue boat. Firefighters had to borrow a smaller one from a game warden.

After divers located Rodriguez’s body, Gonzalez had to break the news to her mother. She said the whole experience had left her with regrets.

"I don't think I want to go swimming ever again in a river. It's dangerous,” Gonzalez said.
