South Side tire shop named Tredz Tire & Wheels operated by women

'Trying to do business in a man's world' at Tredz Tires

SAN ANTONIO - A South Side tire shop is getting a lot of attention these days for more than their prices or quality of their work. They're pumping up their tires and business with a strategy seldom seen in the automotive world. The garage is 'girl's only.'

The tire jack is pink and mechanic doing the pumping is right at home, even in the shadow of the Pep Boys sign across the street. Tredz Tire shop is run and operated by the ladies.

"It's a dirty job. Some girls don't like to get dirty but we definitely do," said Andrea Rodriguez.

19-year-old Rodriguez and her mother Margaret run the shop. They said finding an all female staff has not been hard.

"I like what I do. I like getting dirty. Lifting heavy things. It's good exercise. I look at the positive," said Erica Hinkle, a tire mechanic at the shop.

They said the mechanics at auto shops nearby are friendly, but they have suspicion that it has more to do with the view, rather than the work.

"Yes, it is true there's a perception problem with a woman trying to do business in a man's world. But believe it or not, some women really do know one end of a tire gauge from the other," said Margaret Rodriguez.

"It's a female thing. They want to do something that a man can do, and they can do it," said Rodriguez.

They said they may draw attention for other reasons, but the quality tire work is what it's about.

"They flirt, but I keep it all professional," Hinkle said.

"We are definitely going to get the job done right. Just because we are girls doesn't mean we don't know anything. We definitely know." Andrea said.

Despite fears that they wouldn't make it, the Rodriguez women said business is good. The shop has been open seven months. It's located at 827 Southeast Military Drive.
