Poteet students disciplined for underage drinking
Six football players to miss two games
POTEET, Texas - Poteet High School has disciplined six football players and are finalizing punishments for as many as eight cheerleaders after a weekend party where dozens of teens were cited for alcohol possession.null
Six Poteet high school football players, at least two of them varsity players, will miss the next two games, including Friday's homecoming game. The school district handed out the punishment following a weekend party where 30 students were cited for alcohol possession. The district superintendent said as many as eight cheerleaders were also facing suspensions from Friday's game and possibly other punishments.
The party was held at the home of a varsity cheerleader. Her mother, Bonnie Lynn Horn-Guerra, was arrested Monday and charged with one count of providing alcohol to a minor, a misdemeanor. She posted $8,000 bond Monday evening and was released.
Brandon Lopez, a Poteet senior who was not at the party, said several students are upset that while extracurricular suspensions should go beyond the playing field.
"Two of those students this past weekend were involved in illegal activities," said Lopez, who's the president of the student council. "The sad part is the school is still letting them participate in Homecoming."
Lopez is also running for homecoming king and said others on the ballot have asked school leaders to remove those two students from the ballot but have not received a definite answer.
"By those two kids actions, they're not representing the school or the community and I'm sure that the community agrees with me," he said. "We don't want somebody that's king or queen for homecoming that gets in trouble."
