Jury finds child sex assault defendant guilty
Anthony Maldonado faces life in prison
SAN ANTONIO - A Bexar County jury found Anthony Maldonado guilty Thursday of sexually assaulting two pre-teen girls.null
According to trial testimony, Maldonado fondled and repeatedly raped the girls, who were cousins, from 2005 to 2007.
During closing arguments Thursday, defense lawyer Robert Gebbia argued that the victim's testimony seemed "rehearsed."
Gebbia said the testimony was not strong enough for a conviction on the sexual assault and indecency with a child charges his client was facing.
"There's no medical or DNA evidence," Gebbia told the jury. "All they have is what these girls told them. And you know what? That wasn't even consistent."
Prosecutor Cathrine Hayes countered by saying Gebbia's argument was "offensive."
"Strong cases are answered by desperate defenses, and that is what this is," Hayes told jurors. "The defense theories failed."
Because of his previous sex crime convictions, Maldonado, 51, faces life in prison.
He will be formally sentenced at a later date.
