San Antonio police: Mary Torres, 33, accused of taking car buyer's money in Craigslist deal
San Antonio police: Victim said Torres took his money, left in car he bought from Craigslist
SAN ANTONIO - Mary Torres, 33, faces a theft charge after Universal City police said she allegedly ran an ad on Craigslist to sell a car, then took a would be car buyer's money.
Universal City police received the complaint from the victim on Sept. 1. An arrest warrant affidavit stated that the man told officers he had met with Torres to purchase a 2002 Toyota Celica that she advertised for sale on Craigslist.
The man told Universal City police that he had negotiated a price of $2,300 for the vehicle, and after he handed over $2,000 of it to Torres, she took his money and the car, then left him standing on the street, the afidavit stated.
Acording to the affidavit, the victim said Torres drove him to an apartment complex where she told him she would retrieve the car title and some stereo equipment.
After they began walking through the complex, Torres told him she had forgotten something in the car, he told Universal City police. The man said he then saw Torres speed off in the car with his cash, the affidavit stated.
Detectives said they used a phone number to track down Torres. Although she promised several times to pay back the money if the victim did not press charges, police said she did not do that. They arrested Torres Tuesday on a theft charge.
