Local iPhone 5 buyers wait all night outside Huebner Oaks AT&T store
Locals want to be among first to buy iPhone 5
SAN ANTONIO - Apple’s iPhone 5 gave dozens of San Antonians an extra early wake-up call, enticing them to stand in line for hours at stores such as AT& T at the Huebner Oaks shopping center.
By 6:30 a.m. Friday, the line of customers waiting at that location, near Interstate 10 and Huebner Road, wrapped around the building. Adrian Cisneros had arrived at 5 p.m. the previous day to claim the first spot in line.
"I saw it and I was like, 'I’ve got to get it!’” Cisneros said. "The screen's going to be bigger. It's going to be thinner. It's going to make everything faster.”
A lot of people apparently had the same idea.
Even though the iPhone 5 is said to be Apple’s biggest seller when it comes to presales, it was clear from the long lines that many people decided to wait and purchase it when it actually arrived in stores.
For Andres Gonzalez, that wait was longer than most. While others in line were there to upgrade from the most recent version -- the iPhone 4S -- Gonzalez was still working with an iPhone 3.
“It's a nice little upgrade,” he said, “I think I'm jumping, like, three generations of phones. So I'm pretty excited."
Gonzalez joked that there’s very little the iPhone 5 doesn’t do, adding that "it brushes your teeth. It does your laundry."
While that technology may not be available on the new device, enthusiasts believe there is a lot about it to love. Apple bills the iPhone 5 as its thinnest, lightest, fastest iPhone yet.
At the Huebner Oaks AT&T, employees passed out breakfast tacos, muffins and drinks to customers waiting in line. Other people passed the time by sleeping, reading and playing computer games.
Fifteen hours after he first sat down, Adrian Cisneros finally got up and walked into the store when it opened at 8 a.m.
He smiled as he, acting like a TV game show model, showed off his new black iPhone 5.
