Man leads police on wrong-way chase, hits and kills cycle rider
Police say he'd just committed home invasion when pursuit began
SAN ANTONIO - A man's attempt to escape a crime scene came to a crashing and deadly end Friday night, police say.
That man drove on Loop 410 going the wrong way and crashed into a motorcycle, then tried to run from officers before being captured.
Police Chief Bill McManus says the motorcycle rider he hit died at the scene on 410 near Old Pearsall, and a woman riding on that cycle was critically injured and airlifted from the wreck site.
He says the pursuit started around 7:30 p.m. after the man pulled a home invasion in the 5100 block of Sagamore.
A man from the home started to chase, but stopped when the suspect fired at him, McManus says.
He called police and gave them a description and a license plate.
Officers spotted the suspect minutes later and pursued him a short distance until he drove the wrong direction on 410.
They then saw the crashed motorcycle and other cars the suspect drive into, McManus says.
That suspect then ran from his wrecked car and police chased him through a school bus yard until catching him as he tried to jump a fence.
The chief says the suspect is 36 year-old Benito Garza.
Garza now faces murder, aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, failure to stop and render aid, and evading arrest charges.
Police say a second suspect also was arrested as he ran, but they do not yet have that man's identity.
The name of the dead cycle rider and the injured passenger have not been released.
