New scam claiming to be from 'Windows Servicing Center' targeting users

Caller claims to be 'Microsoft Servicing Center,' can fix computer remotely

SAN ANTONIO - We all get computer problems from time to time, so when Paul Bonner received a phone call claiming he had problems, it didn't sound far-fetched.

"I received a call on my cell phone -- somebody saying they were (with) the 'Windows Servicing Center,'” said Bonner. “(They said) they had received error messages that my computer was infected somehow."

That caller, claiming to be with the “Microsoft Servicing Center,” told Bonner a virus was detected on his computer and should be fixed promptly by following their instructions.

Like Bonner, countless of others across the world have received similar calls, prompting them to fix their computer by following a set of instructions by the caller.

A quick internet search showed stories of people reporting that they paid for fake "help" to fix their computer, others claimed the caller prompted them to click on links, and instead, got spyware installed.

Microsoft also has a warning about the scam posted on their website, saying they do not call customers, and that their team members aren't able to remotely fix computers like these callers claim.

For Bonner, when the caller couldn’t give him a straight answer about the company or other information, he immediately knew something was fishy.

“The main thing was, I don't know how anybody would actually call you on the telephone,” said Bonner. “And I just can't imagine that there's a room somewhere with enough people to check all the error messages for windows operating systems. "

Microsoft's website says if you fell victim to the scam, call your bank to have the payment reversed and report it to police.
