Gregory Mitchell accused of driving drunk, killing pedestrian

Ryan Bettcher, 29, struck, killed while walking along Universal City roadway

SAN ANTONIO - Two hours after Ryan Bettcher, 29, was struck and killed as he walked along a busy Universal City roadway, the blood alcohol level of Gregory Mitchell, the man accused of hitting him, was over twice the legal limit.

That was the testimony of a toxicologist as the intoxication manslaughter trial of Mitchell began on Tuesday.

According to Assistant District Attorney Charles Rich, Mitchell’s car swerved from Aviation Boulevard and hit Bettcher who was walking to a friend’s house shortly after 10 p.m. on May 7, 2011.

“As he goes off the roadway 15 feet, he hits Ryan,” Rich told the jury during opening arguments.

Bettcher was pronounced dead at the scene.

If he is found guilty, Mitchell is facing a maximum punishment of 20 years in prison.

Testimony will continue on Wednesday in Judge Philip Kazen’s 227th District Court.
