Crane driver dies in accident with truck in Atascosa County
Accident backs up traffic on Highway 16 at FM 140 south of Jourdanton
ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas - A crane driver is dead and another in the hospital after they crashed into each other on Highway 16 in Atascosa County.
It happened at about 5 p.m. Wednesday on Highway 16 at FM 140 just south of Jourdanton.
Jason Reyes, a spokesman with the Department of Public Safety, said a truck hauling a large trailer was headed North on Highway 16 when it crashed into a crane headed west across the highway on FM 140.
"We had a vehicle trying to go westbound on FM 140, across Texas 16," said Reyes. "And this commercial vehicle failed to yield the right of way at the stop sign."
The truck hit the crane's driver side, killing the driver of the crane.
The truck driver was taken to South Texas Regional Hospital in fair condition.
The impact also caused the trailer to flip over in the intersection, creating problems on the highway.
Crews tried to keep traffic flowing through the northbound lane until they had to shut the entire highway down to move the trailer. It took crews hours to clear the scene.
"This is a large crane that was involved in this crash," said Reyes. "So, it's going to take a long time."
DPS officials are still investigating the accident, but Reyes said Wednesday night that the stretch of highway where the accident happened has had a lot more traffic.
"This is a busy stretch of roadway," said Reyes. "Tilden is just south of here and 140 and 16 has become extremely busy with Eagle Ford Shale. This is all Eagle Ford Shale traffic that we're dealing with now."
The name and age of the man driving the crane was not released as of Wednesday night.
