Nordstrom Rack, REI open in former Borders sites
Prime retail locations up and running one year after book stores close
SAN ANTONIO - It's a new chapter for the old sites of now-defunct Borders Books and Music as Nordstrom Rack and REI open their doors.
Nordstrom Rack opened Thursday at the Quarry to crowds eager to shop.
"Everybody is saying how excited they are to have the store here," said Nordstrom Rack spokeswoman Megan Garvey.
REI, located at Huebner Oaks, will celebrate its grand opening Friday through Sunday. The store staged a soft opening in September.
One year ago, both locations were in the middle of "going out of business" sales after Borders went bankrupt and closed all of its stores.
The Quarry store is 32,000 square feet, no longer vacant but stocked with off-price designer clothing and shoes.
"If you're a bargain shopper like I am, it's a great store to do that with," said shopper Robin Payne.
Local retail continues to perk up. In the past year, the sector added about 50,000 jobs.
Nordstrom Rack, which has one location at The Rim at La Cantera, employed more than 70 people with the new store.
REI, meanwhile, opened its first San Antonio store. The business model is a consumer cooperative specializing in outdoor gear for activities like camping, hiking and cycling.
The Huebner Oaks store is the eighth in Texas, and store manager Mike McCoy said there are plans to expand within the state.
"They typically are going to be in environments that are economically healthy as well as have a great aptitude for getting people outside and in an active lifestyle," he said.
