SAPD: Vanessa Salas, Arturo Levine blame each other for injuring toddler
SAN ANTONIO - Vanessa Salas, 22, and Arturo Levine, 32, are both facing charges related to injuries suffered by Salas’ 2-year-old son.
San Antonio police said the child’s grandfather called them Wednesday night, reporting that the toddler, whom he identified as Ivan Carrillo, had been abused.
Officers who responded to Jose Salas’ West side apartment said they found Ivan with his body wrapped in a blanket and redness to his face. They said when they looked underneath the blanket, they found bruises all over his body.
Police said the child’s mother, Vanessa Salas, 22, told them she had disciplined the boy, but she blamed the bruises on a fall.
During questioning later at police headquarters, they said the toddler’s mother and Levine blamed each other for the injuries.
Jose Salas said he had begged his daughter to let his grandson stay with him. He said he had noticed that every night when Ivan would cry, Levine would yell at him to be quiet.
He said he has seen Levine hit the child, but never witnessed his daughter physically abusing him.
Police arrested both suspects Thursday morning on a charge of injury to a child. It’s still unclear who has taken custody of the toddler.
