CLEAT: Challenger Susan Pamerleau has no experience as law officer

SAN ANTONIO - The race for Bexar County Sheriff heated up Monday with current Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz getting an endorsement by a law enforcement organization.

Representatives from the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, or CLEAT, packed the steps of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office on Monday.

CLEAT's Charley Wilkeson said his group favored Ortiz over his Republican challenger, Susan Pamerleau.

"Now is not the time to send a rookie in to do a professional's job," Wilkeson said.

He urged voters to re-elect, as a sign read, “a sheriff who's made an arrest.”

Wilkeson said Pamerleau has no background in law enforcement.

"She's never worked the streets, never worked a case, never made an arrest and she's highly unqualified to serve as sheriff," Wilkeson said.

Ortiz himself was not at the rally but points to his 40 years combined with San Antonio police and as a sheriff's deputy.

Pamerleau said she was not surprised Ortiz was not there to personally accept the group's endorsement, calling him an absent sheriff.

She said this race is not about who has worn a badge but who can best manage a multi-million dollar department.

"I may not have pinned on a badge but I've pinned on two Air Force stars as a general officer," Pamerleau said. "I've led organizations and managed budgets much larger than the sheriff's office."

She said she is working hard to beat the incumbent sheriff with billboards and a YouTube campaign.

She also has a question for Ortiz.

"Ask him how many investigations he's done as the sheriff," Pamerleau said.
