Stilts the cat recovers, ready for adoption

Paws were useless due to dragging injuries

SAN ANTONIO - Stilts, the young cat whose paws were scraped raw by dragging injuries last month, has recovered and is ready for adoption, according to his foster mom, Samantha Vojak, a staff member with San Antonio Pets Alive.

“His prognosis is great. He’s completely 100 per cent better,” Vojak said.

She said the young black and white cat is now even well enough that Vojak’s husband, suggested another name.

“My husband thought that Boots was kind of a fun name, so we’ve been going back and forth between Stilts and Boots,” Vojak said.

Instead of that wobbly walk he had when his legs were bandaged, Vojak said Stilts or Boots had gained weight but is lanky and graceful.

Despite the cruelty and pain he suffered, Vojak said he still trusts humans, children and even dogs.

Once scrawny and frightened, Vojak said he was rescued from the streets by a Good Samaritan who took him to her veterinarian. He then was taken to Animal Care Services also manned by San Antonio Pets Alive volunteers who try to rescue the pets being brought in from euthanasia if they’re not adopted.

She said there is an overwhelming need for foster homes like hers to take in dogs or cats while they await adoption.

“There are so many, so many here that need good homes,” Vojak said.

This weekend, San Antonio Pets Alive will be among four groups staging Alamo City “Paw”-doption-a-thon from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

SAPA and Animal Care Services each have locations at ACS, 4710 Highway 151. The San Antonio Humane Society will showcase adoptable pets at 804 Fredericksburg Road, while the Animal Defense League is located at 11300 Nacogdoches Rd.

Dogs and puppies can be adopted for $25, $15 for cats and kittens.

The fees includes vaccinations, spay/neuter and microchips.
