Suspect in ex-commissioner's death found dead
Body of Manuel De Los Reyes Galeas found near site where body of Tommy Shearrer was found
ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas - The man suspected in the shooting of death of former Atascosa County Commissioner Tommy Shearrer has himself been found dead, officials say.null
The body of Manuel De Los Reyes Galeas, 19, was found Friday in a dry creek bed about a half-mile away from where's Shearrer's body was found.
Sheriff's investigators said Shearrer, 56, was found shot to death in his pickup truck Wednesday morning on Farm Road 3006 near Saint Augustine.
A murder warrant was obtained Wednesday night for Galeas (pictured above) and massive manhunt was undertaken to find him.
Between 30 and 35 Sheriff's investigators on horseback combed the area near where Shearrer's pickup was found.
Atascosa officials said all indications point to Galeas having shot and killed himself sometime after Shearrer's slaying on Wednesday afternoon.
Officials Friday said that Shearrer had probably pulled over to help Galeas after the teen was involved in a car crash.
Galeas had fled an earlier scene where he allegedly shot at his girlfriend and Shearrer had maybe offered him a ride, investigators said.
“Maybe it was under a false pretext on where they were going," said Atascosa Sheriff's Deputy Sheriff David Soward. "At some point in time, something happened and Mr. Shearrer was shot and killed.”
The case will now be closed, pending some paperwork.
“You always want closure to a case but it's just a reminder of how sensless this murder was," Soward said. "There was no need to take Mr. Shearrer’s life.”
Atascosa County Sheriff's investigators and the Texas Rangers are still trying to figure out how and where Galeas encountered Shearrer (pictured below).
