Bexar County Sheriff's Sgt. Frank Bellino shoots, kills Jose Guerra, 19, during disturbance
BCSO: Bellino forced to fire in self-defense, placed on administrative leave
BEXAR COUNTY, Texas - A 19-year-old man is dead and a Bexar County sheriff's deputy is on administrative leave after a shooting early Sunday.
On Monday, the victim was identified as Hose Guerra.
According to the sheriff's office, Sgt. Frank Bellino was forced to fire in self-defense after he claims Guerralunged at him and tried to push him into traffic around 1:30 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of FM 1560 and Culebra Road.
The sheriff's office said Bellino spotted Guerra acting erratically around and attempted to talk him, but Guerra became aggressive.
Bellino fired at Guerra, wounding him with multiple shots. EMS took him to University Hospital, but he died of his injuries.
The sheriff's department said Bellino is a 26-year veteran. He's been placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of the shooting investigation.
Part of that investigation could be statements from witnesses, who said Guerra appeared to be the same person they saw acting erratically at a nearby Valero convenience store before the shooting.
This is the second deputy-involved shooting in three days.
County officers shot and wounded a man in southeast Bexar County after they say he pointed a gun at them during a disturbance.
