Testimony: Pregnant woman injured in shooting lost baby
James Morrison guilty in shooting deaths of woman's mother, her sister.
SAN ANTONIO - When James Morrison shot and wounded his pregnant girlfriend, the shooting also resulted in the death of her unborn child.
That is what Candice Moten, 26, told the jury on Monday during the punishment phase of Morrison’s capital murder trial.
On Friday, the jury found Morrison guilty of capital murder for the April 18, 2009, shooting deaths of Moten’s mother, Laura, and her sister, Krystle.
He also faces capital murder charges in the death of the child, who was stillborn. That case was not a part of this trial.
“He knew I was pregnant with his child,” Moten testified. “We also have another child together.”
Morrison shot the woman during a confrontation over allegations that he had slashed the tires on Laura Moten’s van in the parking lot of a Northeast apartment complex, prosecutors said.
The jury rejected his claim that he shot them in self-defense.
The jury’s options in the punishment phase his trial are either life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.
Testimony will continue on Tuesday in Judge Ron Rangel’s 379th District Court.
