Suspect identified in sexual assault of TMI student
Police: Rafael Vera, 25, lured girl away from campus
SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio police are looking for Rafael Vera, 25, after obtaining an arrest warrant for the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl.
The teen, a student at Texas Military Institute, told police she met Vera at a local department store, exchanged phone numbers with him, and the two began texting each other.
“He told the victim that he was still in high school, portraying himself younger than he really was,” said Matt Porter, spokesman for SAPD. “Obviously, he was a 25-year-old grown adult, preying on a child.”
Police say Vera told the girl to skip school and meet him at an undisclosed location, away from campus. When she did, he allegedly sexually assaulted her and took her phone.
“Investigators are looking into the possibility that he took her cell phone, and began texting friends he found on her phone,” said Porter. “That part of the investigation is still ongoing.”
Vera has two prior arrests, one in 2009 for driving while intoxicated, and another in January of 2012 for indecent exposure.
“Right now, we're in the process of tracking this individual down,” said Porter. “If there's anyone out there that knows where he's at, we're asking them to come forward."
Anyone with information on Vera’s whereabouts is urged to call the Special Victims Unit at (210) 207-2313.
