Election officials prepping for early voting

Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 22

SAN ANTONIO - Election officials in Bexar County are getting ready for the first wave of voters who have a chance to cast their ballot when early voting begins on Monday, Oct. 22.

At 87, Velia Salinas has been helping Bexar County residents cast their votes for five decades.

She said her first election was Truman vs. Dewey in 1948.

"I was maybe 19 years old," Salinas said.

But while "the Truman surprise" was her first presidential election, it wasn't her most memorable.

Like many of her counterparts, she said the 2008 presidential election is the one the stands out.

"Young people came out and voted. We had the most young people," Salinas said.

On Friday, days away from early voting, Salinas is one of dozens of election officials, clerks and judges reminiscing as they get their tablets dusted off and ready.

"I love the details and being with the people and making sure that everyone leaves our polling location having done the correct procedures," volunteer Irene Kissling said.

Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 22, and there are a few things these election officials want you to know.

"Do some home work. Go to an early voting site and grab a sample ballot. If you mark your choices ahead of time, it will go so much quicker for you," Jacque Callanen,

with the Bexar County Elections Department, said.
