SAN ANTONIO - The race for State House District 117 is heating up in San Antonio. On Saturday, both candidates were out trying to win over voters.
The race for this district pits Republican incumbent John Garza against former San Antonio City Councilman Phillip Cortez.
Cortez spent his Saturday morning at a Blockwalk event, meeting up with residents. He said even though he is the challenger in this race, he believes his hard work and his views on preventing further cuts to public education will help him take the lead.
"My opponent has voted to cut over 5.4 billion dollars from our education system," said Cortez. "And to me, anytime you are taking money away from our children's classrooms, I think you are doing a bad thing for this state."
Garza has defended his decision for supporting the cuts, saying, "we can't spend money we don't have."
On Saturday, Garza was at a soccer game, meeting with residents. He said he'll be pretty busy from now until election day.
