Bexar County launches prescription discount card
Coast2Coast RX savings average 60% off retail, company says
SAN ANTONIO - To help people afford the high price of prescription medications, Bexar County announced the launch of a new prescription drug discount program.
The Coast2Coast RX card is free and anyone qualifies, regardless of income, age or health status.
The program primarily targets uninsured and underinsured residents, many of whom never fill necessary prescriptions because they don't have the money.
By using the card at their pharmacy, cardholders can save an average of 60 percent off the retailer's price, according to Martin Dettelbach of Financial Marketing Concepts, the issuer of the discount card.
"Virtually every drug, 60,0000 drugs, are covered in this program, so there shouldn't be a time when you can't get a discount," Dettelbach said.
All major pharmacies are participating, as well as most independent pharmacies.
Although the program targets people without insurance coverage, it can also benefit people with insurance if they have a high deductible or their drug isn't covered by their insurance company.
"They should be wise consumers," Dettelbach said. "If their co-pay is $20, maybe under our card it will be $10." He encouraged comparison-shopping.
The card also offers discounts on dental, vision, veterinary and hearing services as well as discounts on lab and imaging tests and diabetes supplies.
The card is valid for the entire family, including many prescriptions for pets.
Consumers can find the card at participating pharmacies, government offices, libraries and Bexar County health facilities.
It can also be printed by visiting the card's website www.coast2coastrx.com.
