Bergheim family says mountain lion killed their dogs
Word of sightings spreads fast in Hill Country community
BERGHEIM, Texas - Three of Tomie Barker’s eight dogs have been mauled and killed over the last month by what she believes is a mountain lion.
Barker said she and her husband have seen the animal in front of their house.
“When you saw the bites on the rat terrier mix, the vet confirmed it was a cat attack. And the fact that we’ve seen the mountain lion in the yard, kind of puts two and two together,” said Barker.
The family believes the mountain lion is approaching their house through a dried up pond in their back yard, which is just feet from their back porch.
Barker plans to put up cameras at her house to find out for sure. With her three-year-old grandson in the house, Barker is now taking extra precautions.
"I’m talking to you right now not armed,” said Barker during an interview with KSAT 12, “but normally we have something on us when we walk out the door.”
About 35 miles southwest of Bergheim, the Bandera Bulletin reported that a car hit and killed a mountain lion roughly two weeks ago.
Barker said she called the Game Warden and Animal Control, but she was told all of her neighbors would have to agree before the cat can be trapped. She wants a professional to handle it.
"I believe if we start shooting at things that go bump in the night, we could be shooting at each other," said Barker.
Until she finds a solution, or the mountain lion moves on, Barker will stay on high alert.
“That’s to say the least,” she said.
