Sergeant pulls women from burning car

One woman critical, another victim stable

SAN ANTONIO - Two women were rescued from a burning car Saturday morning by San Antonio Police Sergeant Jesse Garcia.

One woman is in stable condition and the other is in critical condition, authorities said.

Garcia is recovering from burns to his arm.

It happened in a dark stretch of North Loop 1604 near Sulphur Springs Road.

Lone Oak Volunteer Fire Department's Assistant Fire Chief Wanda McGovern said the two girls were heading home to the Schertz-Cibolo area when they crashed into a light pole.

Garcia saw the car in flames on his route home.

"I feel like if he hadn't been there and pulled them out when it all happened, they maybe wouldn't be here today," McGovern said.

Authorities said the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
