distribution center to open in Schertz

1.3 million square ft. center to be built by late 2013

SCHERTZ, Texas - Schertz will soon be welcoming the largest online retailer in the world. has laid out plans to build a distribution center near Interstate 35 at the corner of Enterprise Avenue and Verde Parkway.

The preliminary agreement was approved Tuesday by Guadalupe County officials and the Schertz Economic Development Corp.

"This project is something we have working very hard to realize, not just for our city, not just for our county, but for this entire area,” said Schertz EDC Executive Director David Gwin.

The project is expected to bring a large boost to the area economy.

Per the agreement, will invest $166 million in the distribution center. Incentives, largely performance-based, were used to lure the company to Schertz.

"The developer will also agree to create a minimum of 350, full-time, fully benefitted jobs,” added Gwin.

Those jobs will result in $11 million in payroll. Gwin believed the numbers could rise even higher.

Once built, the distribution center will be the largest building in Schertz and Guadalupe County with nearly 1.3 million square feet.  That equates to 29 acres under one roof.

Once customers order products online, they will be distributed from the location.

"It’s probably going to be the biggest business in the area for a long time to come," said Maggie Titterington, president of the Schertz Chamber of Commerce.

The announcement has generated plenty of buzz throughout Schertz, which has already welcomed several new businesses.

"It’s a growing place,” said Titterington. “We're going to explode in the next 10 years and these people are recognizing the potential and they want in."

According to Gwin, this will be the largest private investment in Guadalupe County. It is projected to be completed in late 2013.
