Daughters of the Republic of Texas slammed in Alamo management report
Former member files petition to remove DRT from Alamo management
SAN ANTONIO - A day after the Attorney General's Office released a 38-page report alleging mismanagement and misconduct by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas of the Alamo, the former DRT member who filed the complaint is speaking out and she's starting a petition in an effort to get the DRT out of the Alamo.
Former DRT member Sarah Reveley said her concern with the organization started in 2009 when she found out that the Daughters of the Republic of Texas had placed the names of the men that fought in the Spanish-American War in the men's bathroom, right above the toilet..
"They showed it to me," said Reveley. "They put it over the men's toilet in Alamo Hall because they thought it was cute."
A year later, Reveley filed a complaint that prompted an investigation over the Daughters' management of the Alamo.
On Tuesday, the Texas Attorney General's Office released a 38-page report outlining a long list of problems, including the fact that the DRT mismanaged funds and that they failed to properly maintain the Alamo.
Reveley said she discovered while going through a master plan that engineers had concerns about the roof and that the DRT did nothing about it.
"I'm just flipping through it, going, 'My God! Look what the engineer said!'" said Reveley. "And they were concerned about the roof and they told the Daughters that they needed to do some serious testing and the Daughters ignored it."
The Daughters of the Republic of Texas issued a release Tuesday that stated that they were shocked at the "outrageously inaccurate conclusions within the report." And that "it focuses on issues identified nearly three years ago that have already been resolved through contractual and organizational restructuring."
And while General Land Office officials are now the custodians of the Alamo, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas are still managers, something Reveley said she wants changed.
"They're messing with Texas," she said. "They're messing with our patriots. They are messing with the respect of the Alamo and that's bad. And we need to get rid of them."
Reveley has started a petition to remove the DRT as the managers of the Alamo.
