West Side house fire displaces 12

SAFD: House on Marcum Drive had no working smoke detectors

SAN ANTONIO - A fire sparked at a far West Side home and displaced 12 people early Wednesday morning, San Antonio fire officials said.

The fire broke out around 4 a.m. in the 6500 block of Marcum Drive. Fire officials said a total of seven people, including four children lived in house.

Five people lived in another home in the backyard, but were also displaced because San Antonio fire officials said their house had no plumbing so they relied on the main house for the bathroom and cooking.

Residents told SAFD the fire started behind a dresser, and the house had no working smoke detectors.

Firefighters said they had difficulty battling the fire because the house had several compartments or small spaces that were converted into small bedrooms.

No injuries were reported. San Antonio firefighters suspect the cause was electrical and have not released a damage estimate.
