Valero employees host Thanksgiving for the Troops
SAN ANTONIO - Lots of folks spent the holiday on the job but perhaps no group feels the impact of celebrating Thanksgiving away from home more than the military.
Valero employees have been working for weeks now to make sure some Army and Navy troops get a memorable meal on Thanksgiving.
Some 400 troops, 200 Valero employees and their families, and hundreds of pounds of turkey mixed together for the eighth-annual Thanksgiving with the Troops.
"I think it's wonderful and awesome what these young people do," said Valero employee Jackie Robertson. "They dedicate their lives to service and it's the simplest thing that I can do to say, 'Thank you.'"
There's even a 12-year-old serving the troops.
"I am thankful that these people are serving my country and I'm happy because I have family that is serving too," said Annabelle Martinez, the daughter of a Valero employee.
The food served with pride and quickly enjoyed by the troops hungry for the meal -- and the hospitality.
"I think this is a good experience just because people have a chance to get out of the barracks to have some sort of a family-oriented environment with cake and food," said Seaman Travis Richards.
And to top it all off: dessert, home-baked by the Valero employees who couldn't be there in person.
