Family of hit-and-run victim constructs roadside memorial

Police: Guadalupe Baiz killed by suspected drunk driver

SAN ANTONIO - It’s been nearly four months since Guadalupe Baiz was killed in a hit-and-run at the intersection of Nacogdoches Road and Old Moss Road.

On Saturday, his family and friends constructed a makeshift memorial in his honor to remember the husband, father, and grandfather that they lost.

“He touched everybody’s heart,” said Crystal, Baiz’ daughter. “He was all about family, and as you can see here…it’s all family, it’s all friends.”

In the early morning hours of August 2, Biaiz was riding his motorcycle to work. He was going north on Nacogdoches Road when a driver in an SUV pulled out in front of him to make a left turn, police said. Baiz slammed into the car and was ejected from his motorcycle, authorities said.

Police said they believe the driver of the car, 29-year-old Charlotte Herrera, was drunk at the time. She’s currently awaiting trial on charges of intoxication manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid.

That day was supposed to be a celebration for the Baiz family. It was Crystal’s 24th birthday.

“They killed him on my daughter’s 24th birthday," said Diana Baiz. “That's something she has to remember for the rest of her life.”

As dozens of white balloons filled the early afternoon sky Saturday, Crystal said her thoughts were with her dad - a man who put family above all else.

"To us every day will be a day that we remember him in every kind of way,”
