$1 million winning Powerball ticket sold in SA

Winning ticket sold at Frio City Food Mart on Frio City Road

SAN ANTONIO - While a record-breaking $587.5 million Powerball jackpot slipped through the fingers of Texans, people who shop at Frio City Food Mart on San Antonio’s west side hoped they held a $1 million consolation prize in their hands.

Someone bought a ticket, now worth $1 million, at Frio City Food Mart in the 700 block of Frio City Road.

The ticket matched all five numbers in Wednesday night’s drawing. Had it also had the correct Powerball number, the owner or owners would’ve shared in the jumbo jackpot.

Store owner, Hussein Rajab, arrived before sunrise Thursday morning, in the dark in more ways than one. He had no idea his business helped to make someone richer.

"I'm so happy now. I like it,” Hussein said after hearing the news. “It's my customer winning. So I'm so happy now."

The same could not be said, though, for people who began filing into his business soon after opening, hoping their dreams had come true.

"We were all disappointed,” said Elena DeLaCruz. “The kids were very excited that I purchased tickets."

DeLaCruz said she had big plans for the big money.

“Help my family out. Thinking of moving out of the West side,” she said.

Danny Lopez got a small taste of the winning feeling after he learned he had three matching numbers. His ticket earned him $7, which he planned to spend on breakfast tacos.

"I hope it's somebody that really needs it for their holiday. Maybe somebody that's really poor, (I'm) hoping they'll win," Lopez said of the lottery’s local $1 million winner.

As of noon Thursday, that lucky person still had not claimed his or her prize.

In all, there were four $1 million dollar winners in Texas. The other three tickets were sold in Dallas, Houston and Humble.

Unlike retailers who sold the super jackpot-winning tickets, the owner of Frio City Food Mart does not get a bonus prize, according to the Texas Lottery Commission.

Two tickets, sold in Arizona and Missouri, matched all five numbers plus the Powerball number. The holders of those tickets will split the $587.5 million jackpot.
