Father, 3-year-old son killed by driver suspected of using cell phone on Foster Road

Family walking down street when struck by car; Mother, other son hospitalized

SAN ANTONIO - A Cadillac driven by a woman who sheriff's officials said may have been using her cell phone struck four members of a family Thursday in east Bexar County, killing a 3-year-old boy and his 31-year-old father and critically injuring a 4-year-old boy and a 34-year-old mother.

The 3-year-old boy was identified as Eli Beltran and the man was identified as Jose Beltran. The 4-year-old boy was identified as Adrian Beltran, who was hospitalized at University Hospital. The mother was identified as Kristie Vergaare, who was pregnant and was hospitalized at San Antonio Military Medical Center.

The driver was identified as Latonshia Lee-Alezander, 37.

"We have witness statements that say she was on the phone, so we confiscated it and will look into that to see if anything happened there," said Sgt. E.M. Conger of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

There has been no word on what charges -- if any -- the driver could face.

The incident happened on Foster Road near Interstate 10 before 5 p.m.

A mangled stroller could still be seen at the crash site an hour later.

Several witnesses stopped to help the victims and administer CPR.
