Pallets burn, lawnmowers explode during business fire on East Side
Arson suspected in business fire at Clark Avenue, Porter Street
SAN ANTONIO - A fire broke out at an East Side business at the corner of Clark Avenue and Porter Street late Monday night and San Antonio fire officials believe the cause is suspicious.
It started just before midnight, and San Antonio firefighters said it appeared the blaze was set outside the building.
"You could see the flames all the way to the top to the telephone pole," Jose Montez, who lives near the building said.
Pallets stacked along the outside burned and several lawnmowers filled with gasoline exploded during the fire, SAFD officials said.
Live power lines that were downed by the fire also sent sparks into the air.
"It sure was for a lot of people around here, and then the police officer moved to the back and ran all the people back further," Montez said.
Damages were estimated at $30,000 for the structure and $20,000 for the contents.
No one was injured in the fire. The arson unit is investigating the cause.
