How to prevent holiday decoration theft

KSAT crime specialist gives tips

SAN ANTONIO - It is the holiday season, and that means Scrooge is making an appearance as a thief in the night stealing Christmas yard ornaments.

“With the attitude of thieves in San Antonio, if it is not chained down and guarded with a 12-gauge shotgun, it's free for the taking," said KSAT Crime Specialist Eddie Gonzales.

Several residents around town have already been visited by the Grinch.

"There's always opportunist out there every holiday season," Gonzales said.

There are a few things you can do to try to keep your lawn ornaments in the yard, Gonzales said.

  • Make sure they are staked down as firm as they can be.

  • Deflate the inflatables before going to bed.

  • If you feel you need to, take them in the house or garage.

  • You can also use a timer on their lights so they are not on all night.

“Thieves aren't going to spend a lot of time. They are going to be out of there. They are constantly going to be looking around," Gonzales said.

Gonzales said there is no fool-proof way to keep thieves from stealing your stuff -- short of sitting up all night.

"If somebody's intent that they are going to steal something, then there is probably not much you can do," Gonzales said.

Even though this is the season of joy and peace, remember, Gonzales said, they are thieves.

"Thieves have no honor, " Gonzales said.
