Weekend closure set for 281 North near 1604
Traffic to be diverted onto northbound access road
SAN ANTONIO - The Alamo Regional Mobility Authority is urging drivers to plan ahead for a major lane closure on 281 North approaching Loop 1604 this weekend.
“From 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, we will have the main lanes of 281 North closed from Donella to 1604,” said Leroy Alloway, Alamo RMA spokesman. “All traffic will be diverted on to the northbound access road.”
Alloway said work crews plan to finish re-surfacing and re-striping those traffic lanes.
“We’re going to have officers on hand to help move traffic as quickly as it can,” Alloway said.
He said it is estimated 245,000 vehicles daily travel 281 & 1604.
Although Chris Calland said he is a frequent driver in the area, the on-going construction can be confusing.
“It’s hard to figure out exactly what exit to take when you need to take an alternate route.” Calland said.
He said as an example, he was caught by surprise by the new entrance ramp from 281 North to 1604.
“When it first opened you almost had to swerve because you weren’t aware it was on the left hand side now,” Calland said.
Alloway said the east and west connectors off of 281 North were finished about a month ago, connecting the two highways.
However, Alloway said to help matters, the RMA will be installing permanent signage leading up to the new ramp, along with overhead bridge signs.
He said the east and west connectors from 1604 to 218 South should be done in February, and the entire $131 million project that also includes lighting, sidewalks and widening bridges, is scheduled for completion in May.
Alloway said, “Please bear with us. It will all be worth it.”
