Volunteers build South side playground

Mission Del Lago children design playground, park

SAN ANTONIO - Families that live on the far South Side now have a new place to play.

The nonprofit builder of playgrounds across the county, KaBoom, teamed up with sponsors like McDonalds and built a playground in the Mission Del Lago neighborhood in just one day.

Actually, 300 hundred volunteers from the community and Southside High School put in the hours of hard work.

"Growing up, there was never really a park around us (and) for the kids growing up, to have a park here, I think that is going to be really nice for them," said Ann Plumb, a volunteer and senior from Southside High School.

The plans were designed by kids in the community. There are swingsets, slides and monkey bars.

"We’re so excited about it, especially to have such a high-quality playground being put in with all these amenities," said Jeremiah Farr, who lives in the community.

But it’s more than just a playground.

There will be picnic tables, benches, a walking trail and even a stage.

"It’s going to be a lively atmosphere and a place where communities can gather, plan out fun movie nights, (or) picnics out in the space," said Chappy Rago, the KaBoom project manager.
