New Braunfels gas dips to $2.79
Apps help drivers locate cheapest gas
NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - Drivers needing to top off their tanks in New Braunfels got an early Christmas present and little more jingle in their pockets. Gas was selling for $2.79 Monday at a handful of stations.
"We love the price," said Martin Anthony. "I've got a buddy in Kansas and they're paying about four bucks, so we're going to ship him a 50-gallon barrell for Christmas."
At the HEB on Walnut near Interstate 35, it was bumper-to-bumper with drivers waiting to take advantage of the neighborhood price war.
Jessica Mann was using a store gift card to shave another 12 cents off the price of each gallon.
"It's $2.67," she said. "You can't beat that."
Edward Coles uses a gas app on his smart phone to help locate the nearing station and the cheapest price.
"Usually, you can save five cents," he said. "If you turn around the corner, there's a place that's cheaper, usually."
There are several dozens gas apps available for use on iPhones, Androids and other mobile devices.
On most, you can either enter your location or let the app use your current location based on GPS findings.
They will show you a list of gas stations and prices or show them on a map.
A few popular free apps are GasBuddy, iGasUp, AAA TripTik and Mapquest.
A quick check of those apps showed GasBuddy one of the fastest and accurate. Apps are only as accurate and up-to-date as the people who provide the information.
Gas prices have been dropping, down 20 cents a gallon in the past month. The average for San Antonio was $3.10, according to AAA.
