Wounded warriors treated to Christmas getaway

Military Warriors Support Foundation says thanks to military

SAN ANTONIO - Some wounded warriors and their families will have a merrier Christmas this year, thanks to the Military Warriors Support Foundation and the DoubleTree by Hilton San Antonio Downtown Hotel.

About 25 wounded veterans and their families are being treated to a three-day Christmas get away.

The Christmas celebration includes lodging for two nights in the first class accommodations at the DoubleTree by Hilton, meals, and several scheduled activities, including a river barge ride around the Christmas lights downtown.

Toni Carrigan with the Military Warriors Support Foundation said this is the organization's way of saying "thank you" for keeping the nation safe and for the sacrifices that the veterans and their families have made.

"What we try to do is try to host events so, they are able to get away for a little while," said Carrigan. "We have the dinner tonight where they can just enjoy themselves, check into a hotel, get away from it all."

Jonathan Wheeler is a wounded warrior who brought his family to the getaway.

He said life has been different for the entire family since he suffered multiple injuries in Iraq in 2007.

"I had shrapnel wounds to my hip and ankle," said Wheeler. "I had piece of rebar sticking out of my right ankle. The shrapnel in my hip, nicked off my sciatic nerve."

However, Wheeler said for he and his wife, Candace, the best gift is the camaraderie they have with everyone else in the group.

"We have fantastic friends with the organization," said Candace Wheeler. "It's just like a big family, especially around this time of year. Things like that are so important to us."

And although these veterans and their families are already enjoying the activities the foundation has set up for them, Carrigan said there is still time to donate.

Donations to the Military Warriors Support Foundation can be made by calling the DoubleTree San Antonio Hotel at 210-388-0332.
